An active investigation is underway in Windsor following an officer-involved shooting that left a man with life-threatening injuries and prompted the involvement of Ontario’s independent police oversight agency.
According to preliminary information released by the Windsor Police Service, officers initially responded shortly after 6 p.m. to reports of a robbery in the 3200 block of Sandwich Street. Authorities later located a suspect near Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street West, where officers reportedly encountered a man believed to be armed with a knife.
During the confrontation, police discharged their firearms, striking the individual. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, and the injured man was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officials have not yet released the identity of the individual or additional information regarding his current condition.
Because the incident involved police use of force resulting in serious injury, the case has now been turned over to the Special Investigations Unit, commonly known as the SIU. The agency is responsible for independently investigating incidents across Ontario involving police where there has been serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault.
Following the shooting, the area surrounding Rankin Avenue remained heavily secured for several hours while investigators processed the scene and collected evidence. Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing multiple gunshots and observing a significant police presence shortly afterward.
