Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old freshman at Loyola University Chicago from Yorktown, New York, tragically lost her life in a shooting near the Rogers Park campus on March 19, 2026. The aspiring business student, known for her kindness, warmth, and positive spirit, was pronounced dead after being shot while walking with friends at Tobey Prinz Beach.

Gorman, a member of the campus Christian organization Cru, was described by her parents as “full of life, full of kindness, and full of a love that she gave freely to everyone around her.” Friends recall her as thoughtful, joyful, and someone who made those around her feel seen and valued. On the night of the incident, Gorman and friends were taking an early morning stroll to photograph the city skyline when a masked gunman fired a single shot. She was struck in the back and succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The suspect, 25-year-old Jose Medina, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Medina is currently being treated for tuberculosis in Cook County Jail’s medical unit and remains in custody pending further court proceedings. Police say video footage and recovered evidence linked him to the scene.

Gorman’s family released a statement emphasizing their grief, acknowledging the context of Medina’s background while underscoring the profound loss of their daughter. “There is a difference between understanding a life and excusing a loss,” they wrote.

The tragedy has prompted national attention, with discussions surrounding immigration policies entering public discourse. Community groups, including Panas Chicago, expressed solidarity with Gorman’s family and condemned violence.

A private memorial service and community vigil will be held on March 28 in Yorktown, New York, honoring the life of a young woman whose spirit touched all who knew her. Sheridan Gorman will be remembered as a bright, compassionate individual whose life was taken far too soon.
