Gordon Fields of Marietta, Georgia, tragically lost his life early Friday morning in a devastating crash along Interstate 75 South near North Marietta Parkway. He was 47 years old.
According to authorities, the fatal collision occurred just before 1 a.m. in Cobb County, following hours of traffic congestion caused by an earlier accident that had temporarily closed all southbound lanes of I-75. Emergency crews were on the scene managing the previous crash when Fields’ vehicle became involved in the subsequent incident.
Investigators reported that two tractor-trailers were involved in the chain of events leading up to the collision. One truck, driven by 29-year-old Mayki Marcelin of Davenport, Florida, had remained stopped in the southbound lane even after traffic around it began moving again. A second tractor-trailer, driven by 35-year-old Daniel Granados of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, grazed Marcelin’s vehicle while attempting to avoid a direct collision.
Moments later, Fields was driving a white Volkswagen when he struck the rear of the stopped tractor-trailer. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Fields was pronounced dead on the interstate. No other serious injuries were immediately reported, and both tractor-trailer drivers remained at the scene and are cooperating fully with investigators.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions along one of metro Atlanta’s busiest highway corridors, highlighting the challenges of overnight freight and commuter traffic on I-75. Authorities have not yet confirmed the factors contributing to the fatal collision, including potential speed, visibility, distraction, or roadway conditions, and no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
Gordon Fields’ passing is a tragic reminder of the fragility of life and the dangers present on even familiar roadways. Friends, family, and members of the Marietta community mourn his loss and are encouraged to keep his loved ones in their thoughts during this difficult time.
