A fatal collision on Old Highway 99 earlier this week claimed the life of James Emerson, 75, of Rochester, Washington, after a crash involving a dump truck between Tenino and Tilley Road in Rochester.
The Thurston County Coroner’s Office confirmed on May 22 that Emerson died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the collision. Emergency responders were initially dispatched at approximately 9 a.m. on Monday after reports of a serious crash on Old Highway 99. Upon arrival, crews encountered a severe scene in which both vehicles involved had caught fire, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
According to preliminary information from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, Emerson’s passenger vehicle was reportedly in the dump truck’s lane at the time of the impact. However, investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to cross into the opposing lane or what sequence of events led to the collision. Authorities continue to examine whether factors such as speed, distraction, mechanical failure, or roadway conditions played a role.
The driver of the dump truck was also injured in the crash and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials have not released updates on his condition.
Due to the severity of the collision and resulting vehicle fires, Old Highway 99 was closed for several hours as multiple agencies responded, including South Thurston Fire, West Thurston Fire, and Tumwater Fire departments. Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, secure the scene, and assist investigators before the roadway was reopened later that evening with temporary safety measures in place.
As the investigation continues, Emerson is being remembered with deep sorrow by those who knew him. Loved ones are mourning the sudden and tragic loss, holding onto memories of him as they navigate an unexpected and painful farewell.
