The community of Virginia Beach is mourning the tragic death of 34-year-old Kathleen Bachand, who was killed Thursday night in a fatal hit-and-run crash along Pacific Avenue. Her death has left family members, friends, and residents grieving a devastating loss and calling attention to ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety.
According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, emergency dispatchers received reports of a pedestrian being struck at approximately 9 p.m. in the 900 block of Pacific Avenue. Officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel responded to the scene, where they found Bachand deceased in the roadway.
Investigators with the department’s Traffic Safety Unit determined in a preliminary review that Bachand was inside a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle. Authorities say the driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, prompting an urgent investigation.
Police later located the suspected driver, identified as 48-year-old John Peacock, in a nearby hotel parking lot. He was taken into custody without incident. Authorities confirmed that Peacock has been charged with manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. Investigators also stated that alcohol impairment is suspected as a contributing factor, though the investigation remains ongoing.
The sudden and tragic loss of Kathleen Bachand has deeply affected those who knew her, as well as members of the broader community. Loved ones are mourning a life cut short in a violent and preventable crash, while friends and neighbors continue to share condolences and memories in her honor.
As tributes continue, many in the community are also expressing concern about pedestrian safety and the dangers of impaired driving, particularly in busy urban areas where crosswalks are heavily used.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and additional details may be released as the case develops.
