South Gate Industrial Fire Prompts Major LAFD Response

South Gate, California – Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) crews are actively battling a large industrial fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon at a commercial building in South Gate, sending thick smoke into the air and prompting a major emergency response across the area.

According to early reports, the fire was first reported shortly after midday when witnesses saw smoke rising from an industrial facility in a busy commercial zone. The situation quickly escalated as flames intensified and spread through portions of the structure, leading to a large-scale fire response.

Firefighters from LAFD arrived quickly and began aggressive suppression efforts to prevent the fire from extending to nearby buildings within the tightly packed industrial corridor. Because of the size of the structure and the materials typically stored in such facilities, crews focused heavily on perimeter control and exposure protection.

Additional units were called in under mutual aid agreements, bringing extra resources, personnel, and equipment to assist in containment efforts. Ladder trucks were used to attack the fire from above while ground crews established hose lines around the structure to contain the blaze.

Thick smoke was reported across nearby streets, temporarily reducing visibility and prompting officials to advise residents and workers to stay indoors and avoid the immediate area. Traffic in surrounding roads was also disrupted as emergency vehicles secured access routes and law enforcement assisted with closures and detours.

At this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined. LAFD investigators are expected to begin examining the scene once conditions are safe, focusing on identifying the origin point and any contributing factors.

No confirmed fatalities have been reported, and information regarding possible injuries has not yet been released. Emergency medical teams were staged nearby as a precaution throughout the incident.

Officials also noted that industrial fires of this scale can be complex due to building size, structural hazards, and materials involved, often requiring extended operations and coordinated multi-agency response.

Fire crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours as they continue suppression and overhaul work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and no hotspots remain. The situation remains active and under control as LAFD continues its response in South Gate.
